The history of Saint Michael’s School can trace its roots back to Father John de Fontes Ferraz who was appointed pastor of Saint Michael Church in 1917.
Father Ferraz was an educator in his native Sao Miguel and his life’s dream was to establish a parochial school in his new American parish. His main concern was that of providing a Catholic education for his young parishioners. This dream became a reality and classes were begun in September 1931. The school was staffed by the Sisters of the Holy Union of the Sacred Hearts.
During its early history Saint Michael’s School was housed in three different buildings in the north end of the city. As enrollment continued to increase, the parishioners of Saint Michael’s School were committed to building a new school. The modern educational facility was completed in 1957 and was blessed by Bishop Connolly on September 23, 1957.
Today, Saint Michael’s School continues to follow the foundation laid by Fr. Ferraz: a parish school serving its community and filling the lives of its students with a love of Christ and a strong academic foundation.
Saint Michael’s School has been serving generations of the Portuguese American community and generations of Catholic families with a comprehensive education steeped in the traditions and values of our faith.
